Made from cabinet-grade 5/8” hardwood – core plywood, the exterior of these trays are finished with three coats of a satin waterborne finish. This high-end wood finishes product is made by Milesi, Italy. This results in an easily maintained low-lustre and durable finish that looks very professional in any setting and will thrive through many years of vigorous use.
As with all of our hand-made sand trays, the interiors are water-proofed and suitable for use with wet sand. The sand tray interior has been given three coats of marine-grade epoxy for water-tightness. Added to this is an additional three coats of marine-grade blue waterborne finish(by Milesi). This is a highly abrasion-resistant finish that will be able to withstand many years of hard use, with either wet or dry sand. This sand tray is shipped with a low-lustre interior sheen, in the appropriate sky blue as prescribed for Kalffian sandplay.
The tray corners are finger-joined, which is a very sturdy and reliable method of assembly because it greatly increases the area of the glue joint. In additional to the precise-fitting finger-joins on the corners, hardwood pins are placed through the entire length of each of the sand tray corners. This ensures structural stability.

As with all of our other trays, our Baltic Birch sand tray is a standard Kalffian dimension (interior 28.5” x 19.5” x 3”) The exterior dimensions of this sand tray are approximately 29.75″ x 20.75″ x 3.5″.

Optional ‘discreet’ handles
This is a very effective yet discreet way to improve the transportability of your sand tray without affecting its function.
These attractive and very functional discreet handles can be added to any tray. These are integral handles, meaning there is no hardware such as metal, plastic, screws, or nails. This means that the handles will never fail, as hardware handles are apt to do.
They provide a far more secure grip on a loaded sand tray than it may appear. This is because the gripping-point is beveled upwards at a 14-degree angle (see diagram below). This pulls your fingers towards the center of the tray. When lifting a heavy tray there is no sensation that you are about to lose your grip.
Our discreet handles do not in any way affect or interfere with the tray interiors or any activity that takes place inside the sand tray.
At this time handles are requested for ~50% of the trays we build.
